Story Summary of Faqeer e Muhabat

Episode 1 opens in the present. A girl in a black hijab tells an older woman that she wasted eight years of her life loving a man who never loved her back, and that all she gained from those years was regret. When the older woman asks whether she still loves him, she says no, she does not love him anymore. And then she adds the turn the whole novel hangs on: now, when she no longer loves him, he finally loves her.

The story then goes back in time. Rabail Hassan is a gentle Quran student who lost her mother as a little girl. She has quietly loved her cousin Jahanzeb for years. When her khala comes to ask for Rabail’s hand for Jahanzeb, the whole family celebrates. But Jahanzeb tells his mother that he loves a girl he met at university and will marry no one else.

Running alongside Rabail’s story is a darker thread. Baran Khan is a man shaped by past trauma, burning for revenge for his mother’s death. His thread runs parallel to Rabail’s heartbreak, and it is what gives this romance its revenge edge alongside its one-sided love.

Rabail’s own life, as Episode 1 shows it, is built on faith and learning. She studied at a madrasa and now teaches there: she is an alima and a hafiza. Her elder sister Sawabiya’s mehndi day is where Episode 1 finds her at home, woken for the celebrations, still carrying a love she has not spoken aloud.
