About This Novel
Abdul Qadir begins as a lonely young man with a heart of gold, easily influenced by the people around him. His friendship with Zareen, a spoilt and fast young woman, pulls him towards drinking and smoking, and when he proposes to her and is rejected, his heartbreak changes the course of his life.
Sent abroad by his mother Meera, Abdul Qadir loses himself in a new culture until he meets Nell, who gently brings him back towards religion. Their marriage, and Nell passing, mark the turning point of his life. When he returns home, he is a changed man: bearded, capped, and determined to become a religious scholar.
The final chapters bring the old threads together. Meera, who once wanted her son changed back, comes to accept him, and Zareen, now divorced twice and living in poverty, returns to his life in unexpected ways. The story ends with Abdul Qadir asking Zareen to call him by his full name, a small moment that carries the whole journey in it.
